Legal and Policy Instruments on Rights and Provisions on Other Issues in Small-Scale Fisheries of Nigeria
Abstract
Section titled “Abstract”Paper summary generated by OpenAI: This chapter examines the legal and policy frameworks governing small-scale fisheries in Nigeria, highlighting the lack of data on the implementation of access rights as outlined in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Indicator 14.b.1. Despite Nigeria’s endorsement of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries, there has been insufficient progress in their application. The analysis reveals that existing regulations, rooted in the 1999 Constitution, are fragmented and inadequately address the rights of fishers and fishing communities. By adopting a transdisciplinary approach, the chapter explores how these legal instruments can better protect the interests of small-scale fishers in Nigeria.
