Evidence of spatial competition, over resource scarcity, as a primary driver of conflicts between small-scale and industrial fishers
Abstract
Section titled “Abstract”Paper summary generated by OpenAI: This study investigates the rising conflicts between small-scale and industrial fishers, particularly in Ghana, by examining the role of spatial competition over resource scarcity. Utilizing a novel spatial analysis of conflict locations from 1985 to 2014, the authors found that 98% of conflicts occurred within designated exclusion zones for industrial vessels, primarily near major ports. The results indicate that these conflicts are more closely linked to the spatial presence of vessels rather than resource availability. The findings emphasize the need for evidence-based policies that focus on reducing vessel encounters and clarifying spatial rights, rather than solely addressing resource scarcity.
