Effect of social protection programmes on household food security: a case of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme in the Tolon District of Ghana
Abstract
Section titled “Abstract”Paper summary generated by OpenAI: This study investigates the impact of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme on household food security in the Tolon District of Ghana. Utilizing a multistage sampling technique, 400 participants and non-participants were surveyed, and food security indicators were assessed through consumption expenditure, Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS), and Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS). The Endogenous Switching Regression model revealed that LEAP participation resulted in significant improvements, with an 8% increase in consumption expenditure, a 36% rise in HDDS, and a 59% reduction in food insecurity among beneficiaries. The findings suggest that expanding the programme could further enhance food security for more impoverished households.
